The third-party smart TRVs reviewed here all do much the same thing, it is the control thermostat that is the most important choice. The Honeywell EvoHome is suited for much larger properties. All six other thermostats are compatible with the vast majority of heating systems (old and new boilers) and will operate the boiler efficiently based on a learned pattern of when you need heat.
Everything you can do from the touchscreen controller, you can also do from the smartphone app, either remotely or in your home, bar copying schedules between zones. Honeywell has designed the app so you can see all the different zones and related temperatures directly on the home screen. All of the individual components of the Evohome setup are made of the same white plastic, which is disappointing when some of the competition have clearly put a lot of thought into their designs. The eqiva smart radiator valve claims that it can save you up to 30% on your heating bills, which would be higher than the 10-12% savings that Nest claim you’ll have with their Learning Thermostat. This is disappointing, especially as there are other smart thermostats from Honeywell, like the Lyric, that have all these integrations (but don’t have the zonal control of the Evohome). Hopefully there will be an Evohome 2 at some point down the line that combines the best of both.
The starter kit shared here contains both a smart thermostat and radiator valve, you only need one thermostat per home so it’s easily expandable with additional radiator valves.
Installation of the Evohome system is a little more involved than with some other smart thermostats available due to the fact that each radiator in your house needs to be fitted with an individual thermostat. All the digital features are pulled together within the app which can help you keep an eye on the overall heating system and to manage the settings for different zones of the house. You can see how much you're heating Many smart heating apps allow you to monitor your energy use, making it easier to see where you could be saving money. This product does require the Tuya Zigbee Gateway Hub to operate properly, once set up you can use with Alexa and Google Home via the Tuya smartlife skill.
