I’m really amazed at how simple this coffee maker is to use. In fact, I’d go as far as to say that it’s probably easier than a machine you might have at home. Instead, you have to use 60mm coffee pods, which basically look like round tea pouches. The build of this coffee maker is light, durable, and as high quality as the tools made by Makita. However, we must take into account the weight of the battery (200-210g), the typical amount of water used for a cup of coffee (160g), the coffee grinder for ground coffee, and the machine (1500g). In that case, it adds up to a pretty heavy quantity for a portable coffee maker. This loses half a point. This coffee maker has a compact design with portability in mind, so we don’t really expect it to make a large batch of coffee at once. The machine features a boil dry protection function which stops the machine from burning out. If the water empties, the sensor inside will cut off power automatically should the temperature inside the machine increase. Total peace of mind when you get distracted on the job.

It’s a simple two-step process to make coffee: one, fill up the water tank; two, add your favorite ground coffee and then wait five minutes. As far as quality goes, you get a pretty decent cup of regular coffee with this machine. It’s piping hot, yet not burnt – just the right temperature.

Compatible devices

While the Makita DCM501Z promises a hot cup of coffee, we noticed that finished brews were around 176 F° or 80 C°. While this is still quite impressive for a battery-operated coffee machine, it’s somewhat disappointing if you were expecting something piping hot. It gets even worse if you drink your coffee with milk, as this further lowers the temperature of an already somewhat tepid cup of coffee. It’s also worth pointing out that this coffee machine works with pods and ground coffee, so bring along your best grinder so that you can enjoy the freshest possible cup of Joe. However, keep in mind that you also need a Makita battery to make it work. If you already own Makita cordless tools, then you have one that you can use for the coffee maker as well.

Well, at least you can save up on buying paper filters, given the machine has a permanent drip filter. The mug has been designed to fit snugly into the machine so that you don’t get splashed by scolding hot water. It also comes with a lid to prevent dust entry. By way of a small hole, the lid is even attachable whilst your mug is in the machine brewing. The lid is an added bonus for keeping your coffee hotter for longer, too.
