About this deal

I think that so long as you and your gaming group know what type of game you’re all getting into, if you start playing Zweihander, you should have a good shot of getting a long-term RPG campaign rolling. Zweihänder Grim & Perilous RPG, Revised Core Rulebook by Daniel Fox, Andrews McMeel Publishing 2019. ISBN 9781524851668 I am just going to refer to Zweihänder as Z from now on as I am going to use the games name so often that typing that umlaut on the a is just a pain in the arse. Extreme Omnisexual: The Grendel want your women. They also want some of your men... and the children. Plus the occasional farm animal (though the Grendel really don't like the offspring of that particular breeding).

This is another distinctive aspect of Zweihänder – its overwhelming love for random tables. There are tables for hit locations, injuries and magical mishaps, but nowhere is this this love more apparent than during character creation. If you follow the rules as they’re written, you’ll randomly roll up everything from your character’s starting profession to their eye colour – the impact that blind chance can have is immense. ZWEIHÄNDER Grim & Perilous RPG is a bloodier, grimmer and grittier version of classic tabletop role-playing games you may already familiar with. The community calls this style of gaming the pathetic aesthetic, but we simply call it grim & perilous gaming. I understand that Zweihander aims to be a roleplay game where people actually roleplay. But I normally find that people select their own desired level of roleplaying, no matter how many cues a TTRPG provides. There’s also nothing wrong with players selecting their own level of roleplaying for a game they play in their free time. Dicebreaker is owned by Gamer Network Limited, a ReedPop company and subsidiary of Reed Exhibitions Limited. Up: The Fate Points. Burn one and you get to survive an event that otherwise would kill you by some extraordinary quirk of fate.Torches and Pitchforks: A very real threat to most adventurers. When your insanities grow too grotesque, when your mutations grow too hideous, or when the peasants find out that you have a wizard (or worse, an elf) in your party; the mob awaits! I’ve also got experience with Warhammer, both FRP and the original miniature stuff. Their setting is basically a reimagined Earth, but it’s also a constantly developing one. If Z’s trying to copy that it will be hard to keep up. Zweihänder Grim & Perilous RPG, Character's Folio by Daniel Fox, Andrews McMeel Publishing 2020. ISBN 1524858757 In contrast the Community Content Programs of OBS have a different permissions with a different set of conditions. One of which, non derivative work, I have serious issues with along with actively advocating it removal for any CCP where the focus on sharing a set of rules not a setting.

Zweihander RPG Review - Eternity TTRPG Zweihander RPG Review - Eternity TTRPG

Unfortunately, in Zweihander there are lots of options in combat from the very beginning, which is a problem. On the other hand, player skill plays a big factor in how battles unravel, which I really like. But since there is no “introductory course” in combat, as a player, you sort of have to learn all the available combat maneuvers and increase your skill in battle, all before you feel like you’re much use when it comes to combat. Basically, just a steep learning curve. To give you an idea of how hardcore game realism tends to play out with a gaming group – and what I’d do were to play an entire campaign of Zweihander – is that most in-depth rules like those mentioned above (character injuries, carrying capacity, etc.) simple get ignored. Maybe ‘funny’ is too strong a word, but still the examples are much more positive than the surrounding narrative texts. I will be interesting to see how the feel of the game proceeds. Sliding Scale of Idealism Versus Cynicism: As noted, cynical. Although not as cynical as say, 40k. The random roles system will provide players with less of a party of adventurers than a band of ugly thugs. Combat is brutal and a high-risk affair, a misroll during spell casting may consign your soul to hell. Firearms (of the general arquebus variety) are similarly risky; a misfire can easily kill a low to medium level character. More likely, however, is a misfire that destroys the weapon and all its ammunition... and that is pretty likely, but you can still earn your happy ending. The world may be doomed, but the village behind yon hill can still be saved.Nigh-Invulnerable: Beware fighting monsters with the Accursed or Dense Anatomy. Accursed means you're up against a supernatural creature that can only be harmed with magical weapons. Dense Anatomy means you're fighting up against something with a weird blobby mess for a body and it requires fire to damage. Total Party Kill: Very easy to achieve for a GM, without even trying. A few monsters — like Dragons and Greater Demons — are basically statted only so a GM can use them to cause this. Character creation in Zweihander is very in-depth. I mentioned the tables for randomly-generating your character, above. A few more tables I didn’t mention, already: there are random tables for your character’s height, weight, build, and social class. This sounds really cool at first, but just think about it. It’s the kind of thing that’s really neat in a video game, but details like that in a TTRPG are a bit (way too) much. The rules are also confusing when it comes to character creation in the following way: it seems like you must roll randomly for your character’s gender, archetype, and profession. There is some language in the rulebook that suggests players have the power to choose important details of your character, but it’s just that if you want to play the game exactly as-written, it’s really not clear what you should do. It's a WFRP 2nd Edition heartbreaker-ish ruleset. This isn't a bad thing. Think of it kinda like WFRP 2.5.

Monty Haul: Averted. Unless your party has a skilled rune-smith with a lot of Wyrdstone, the only magic items around are legendary relics like the Hammer of the God-Emperor - items that aren't going to be lying around in a dungeon. Additionally there won't be heaps of gold and jewels to haul off, treasure is going to be taking that dead bandit's rusty sword and selling it for scrap metal. On an entirely different note, Zweihander has the largest collection of tables for randomly-generating character traits of any game I’ve ever seen. You can generate your gender (…why?). Randomly generate your race (pretty cool). Races have randomly generated racial traits. There are also randomly generated character names, based on race and gender (ok, also pretty cool, I suppose). On and on it goes. You can’t fathom the number of randomly generated tables in this game, which I have to say, is pretty unique.I have a more lighthearted tale for you all about my first time DMing Zweihander. For those who haven’t played it, Zweihander is an rpg focused on low fantasy and the effects a grimdark world has on its inhabitants. It has two main, constant themes throughout: the omnipotence and irreversible nature of fate, and the internal struggle of every man and woman against evil and chaos. On these two points it is brutal.

ZWEIHÄNDER RPG - Roll20

Mars Needs Women: The Grendel (this game's Beastmen), the Formor and the Orx are a mostly male species. And all three of these will go and grab themselves humanoid women (not just human or elf - dwarf, gnomes and halflings work too) to make into sex slaves for reproduction. And the Orx don't even need to, they mainly reproduce by putting spores in corpses and they hate their halfbreed offspring Booguns - the sex slave part is just them asserting dominance.Zweihänder Grim & Perilous RPG, generally referred to simply as Zweihänder, is an ENnie award winning tabletop role-playing game published by Grim & Perilous Studios in 2017 following a successful crowdfunding project. [1] As of 2019, the game is published by Andrews McMeel Publishing. [2] System [ edit ] He was about to explain to them that he would pay them to help him reclaim his keep when the carriage stopped and a smarmy voice outside told everyone to freeze. Someone told NPC to look out, and I obliged by having him lean out the window, because the noble was supposed to be kinda naive. This is when the highwayman outside, also an NPC and therefore controlled by me, ruined this entire mission and half of the rest of the plot. Always Chaotic Evil: Almost all the mutant races, the Chosen of Chaos and every single thing that is Abyssal. For them, slaughter and rapine are virtues. ENnie gold winner of Best Game and Product Of The Year, this revised edition features an all-new layout, rules clarifications, and errata updates from 2018. Of all the tabletop RPGs on this list, Zweihander is the most realistic, dark, grim, and gritty. If I had to summarize it into one aspect, I’d say that the amount of realism in Zweihander is the reason people either love or loathe this game.
